Dr. Max expected to lead Polish pharmacy market

Monika Stefańczyk, Head Pharmaceutical Analyst, PMR

Dr. Max, which was is owned by Penta Investments, was the largest independent pharmacy chain in Poland (not owned by a wholesaler) even before the acquisition of Mediq, and the acquisition of the latter would make it the undisputed leader, with more than 300 pharmacies (including herbal and medical stores and franchise pharmacies).

Small independent pharmacies are definitely not pleased by this, as it is very difficult for them to stay in business, and such concentration is having an adverse effect on their financial standing, which has already been affected by the Reimbursement Act, (the law was also unfavourable for Mediq, whose profits from its retail business declined more rapidly than those from wholesale in 2012).
